Finland, officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic
country on the Fennoscandian region of northern Europe. It is bordered by
Sweden in the west, Norway to the north, Russia in the east to the south across
the Gulf of Finland and Estonia.
5.4 million people living in Finland (late 2012), and most
are concentrated in the southern regions. In terms of area, it is the eighth
largest country in Europe and the least populated country of the European Union.
From the 12th to the 19th century, Finland was part of Sweden.
By some measures Finland has the best educational system in
Europe and has recently been ranked as one of the most competitive countries in
the world peaceful and economically. It has been rated with the highest quality
of life as one of the world's countries. In 2010, Newsweek ranked Finland as
"the best country in the world" in general.
Finland is a country of a thousand lakes and islands, about
188,000 lakes (larger than 500 m2 or 0.12 acres) and 179,000 islands. Its
largest lake, Saimaa, is the fourth largest in Europe. The lake area called
MORE Lakeland Finland. The highest concentration of continental islands is
between Finland and the main island of Åland, in southwestern Archipelago Sea.
Finnish cuisine is notable for generally combining
traditional dishes and haute cuisine with a modern country style kitchen. Fish
and meat a prominent role in traditional Finnish dishes from the western part
of the country, while the eastern dishes, traditionally included various
vegetables and mushrooms. Finnish food often whole grains (rye, barley, oats)
and berries (such as blueberries, cranberries, blackberries and buckthorn).
Milk and dairy products like buttermilk are commonly used as food, drink or in
various recipes.
